It’s a battle in the wide open AFC West as the San Diego Chargers host the Denver Broncos on ESPN’s Monday Night Football.

It was a slow start to the season for the San Diego Chargers but after winning two in a row, they are just a game and a half out of first with plenty of football left to play. While the record doesn’t show it, San Diego is fourth in points scored and first in passing yards in the NFL. Phillip Rivers has completed 65.3 percent of his passes for 2,944 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions while being sacked 22 times. For a while it looks like San Diego may have been regretting LaDanian Tomlinson go a little too early as the running game struggled but Mike Tolbert and Ryan Mathews each have 87 carries with Tolbert totaling 395 yards and seven touchdowns and Mathews running for 382 yards and two scores. Vincent Jackson hasn’t played a down yet this season so it’s been Antonio Gates returning to Pro Bowl form with 40 catches for 663 yards and nine touchdowns and Patrick Crayton and Malcolm Floyd catching 25 and 24 passes each. Eric Weddle leads the Chargers in tackles with 53 and Kevin Burnett is next with 52. Shaun Phillips has seven sacks and Antonio Gray has four as the Chargers have 27 sacks total as a team. Antoine Cason leads San Diego in interceptions with two as they have less than one a game with just eight as a team. For the season San Diego is averaging 26.6 points and 420.2 yards per game while the defense is allowing 21.9 points and 274.6 yards per game.

It’s been a rough season for the Denver Broncos and after some of the personnel decisions, it’s tough to imagine that the current regime will remain intact if they stay the course for the rest of the season. The Broncos came up with a monster effort last week as they pounded the Kansas City Chiefs right out of the gate and never took their foot off of the gas in by far their most impressive showing this season. While no one is out of it in the AFC West, a loss in this spot could be devastating. While Tim Tebow has seen some action at QB, mostly in running situations, it’s been Kyle Orton leading the Denver offense completing 62 percent of his passes for 2,806 yards and 16 touchdowns with five interceptions while getting sacked 21 times. Knowshon Moreno is the leading ground gainer but with a 3.7 yard per carry average for 358 yards with two touchdowns, he isn’t scaring any defense. Brandon Lloyd and and Jabar Gaffney each have 48 catches with Lloyd having 968 yards and six touchdowns while Gaffney has 573 yards and two touchdowns. D.J. Williams leads all Bronco tacklers with 74 tackles and three and a half sacks and Mario Haggan is next with 57 tackles. With Elvis Dumervil gone for the season, Denver just doesn’t get to the QB as they have just 13 sacks and with just five interceptions as a team, the defense isn’t getting it done. For the season Denver is averaging 22.6 points and 373.3 yards while the defense is allowing 28 points and 372.9 yards per game.

San Diego is 20-6 against the spread as a home favorite of up to 10 points, 1-5 against the spread following a bye week, and 0-3-1 against the spread when playing a team with a losing record. Denver is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games as an underdog, 7-18-1 against the spread in their last 26 against the AFC West, and 0-4 against the spread following a cover. The favorite is 5-1-1 against the spread in the last seven meetings of these two.

These two teams know each other well and know each other tendencies and this will be a man on man game where moving the ball is going to be a process, not a given. While we may see some fireworks, I think more than likely we will see methodical drives which will lead to a low scoring game. For the free play in this one, I am going to go with a play on the total and with it at 50 and rising, I think it’s comfortably under. I also have a play on who will cover the spread and I will put that in the Premium Section where I was 5-1 against the spread in my exclusive premium NFL Picks on yesterday’s NFL card.

Mitch’s Pick: Under 50

See who Mitch thinks will cover the spread an much more in our Premium Area (Mitch was 5-1 against the spread yesterday with his NFL Picks as he’s had just two losing NFL weeks this season)
