The Tampa Bay Buccaneers look to keep pace in the NFC South while the San Francisco 49ers look to get back into it in the NFC West as the two meet in San Francisco.
The San Francisco 49ers are recovering from their miserable start and after winning their last two games, Mike Singletary’s team is just two games out of first place. The San Francisco offense has sputtered this season as the Niners are 31st in points scored. Alex Smith has completed 59.1 percent of his passes for 1,554 yards with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions. Frank Gore has carried the bulk of the offensive load gaining 778 yards and three touchdowns and grabbing 41 receptions for 415 yards and two more touchdowns. Vernon Davis has 37 catches for 513 yards and four touchdowns and Michael Crabtree has 35 catches for 446 yards and four touchdowns. Patrick Willis is one of the more feared players in the game with 78 tackles and Takeo Spikes has 50 and Justin Smith leads in sacks with five followed by Parys Haralson with four. Shawntae Spencer has three interceptions and Nate Clements has two. For the season San Francisco is averaging 17.8 points and 327.6 yards per game while the defense is allowing 22 points and 331.4 yards.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are one of the NFL’s many surprise teams for the first half of the season and while they haven’t been the most exciting teams to watch this season, they have been steady and play hard. Josh Freeman continues to develop as he’s completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 1,963 yards for 12 touchdowns and five interceptions while being sacked 16 times. Cadillac Williams has 287 yards on the ground while cast off LeGarrette Blount has 359 yards and four touchdowns. Mike Williams leads the Bucs with 40 catches and Kellen Winslow has 39. Barrett Ruud leads Tampa Bay in tackles with 70 and ageless Ronde Barber has 53. Stylez White has three sacks as Tampa Bay has just eight as a team. Aqib Talib has five interceptions and Barber has two. For the season Tampa Bay is averaging 20.9 points and 327.9 yards while the defense is allowing 22.9 points and 353.8 yards.
San Francisco is 8-2-3 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover, 1-4 against the spread in their last five overall, and 1-6 against the spread in their last seven games as a favorite. Tampa Bay is 6-0 against the spread in their last six road games, 4-1 against the spread when playing a team with a losing record, and 5-11 against the spread in their last 16 games following a win of 14 points or more.
This is a long road trip for Tampa Bay but their style of play is solid for the road as it isn’t too risky and comes down to the basics, simply blocking and tackling. This is going to be a close one and getting points before they even kick off seems to be the play.
