The Pittsburgh Steelers look to rebound from a sobering home loss to new England as they host the Oakland Raiders.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have lost two of their last three games and have fallen into a tie for first in the AFC North with the Baltimore Ravens. Ben Roethlisberger has had enough time back with the team to shake off the rust but a tough schedule and and what looks to be some missing pieces are taking their toll on the what many consider to be the favorites to win the Super Bowl this season. Roethlisberger has completed 62.7 percent of his passes for nine touchdowns and four interceptions and while he has been sacked 12 times, he’s been under big time pressure seemingly all the time. Rashard Mendenhall has been effective but he looks to running out of gas as the toll of a full NFL season as the featured back is taking it’s toll. Mike Wallace and Hines Ward both have 30 catches and Ward is questionable for this one as he suffered a concussion against New England. While the offense has had some issues, the defense is one of the best in the NFL with Lawrence Timmons leading the way with 85 tackles and three sacks and James Harrison with 64 tackles and seven sacks but it’s clear this defense is not the same without Aaron Smith. Ike Taylor, Timmons, and Troy Polamalu all have two interceptions as the Steelers have 11 as a team. For the season Pittsburgh is averaging 22.2 points per game and 313.6 yards while the defense is allowing 18 points and 315.4 yards per game.

The Oakland Raiders have won three in a row and are in first place in the AFC West. It took the Raiders a few games to find themselves but now they appear to be clicking and looking back they are a missed field goal chip shot from being in control of the West. Jason Campbell has been vastly improved since returning as the starter and for the season he has completed just 56.7 percent of his passes with seven touchdowns and five interceptions while being sacked 19 times but as of late he has been working on the good side of those numbers. With both Darren McFadden and Michael Bush healthy, the Raiders running game is twice as tough as McFadden has 757 yards and four touchdowns and Bush has 324 yards and four scores. Zach Miller is a budding star at Tight End with 34 catches and McFadden has 24 but it is the emergence of the young and speedy receivers, Louis Murphy, Darrius Heyward-Bey, and Jacoby Ford, which has been the difference. It’s been a team effort on defense with Tyvon Branch and Michael Huff leading in tackles and Matt Shaughnessy and Tommy Kelly with five sacks each as the Raiders have been bringing the heat with 27 sacks on the year. For the season Oakland is averaging 26.1 points and 361 yards per game while the defense allows 20.9 points and 309.7 yards per game.

Pittsburgh is 2-5-1 against the spread in their last eight home games, 0-4 against the spread in their last four games against a team with a winning record, and 4-1 against the spread following a double digit home loss. Oakland is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games as an underdog, 5-1 against the spread when playing a team with a winning record, and 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games against the AFC. Oakland has covered four of the last five meetings and the underdog has covered six of the last seven.

Pittsburgh is a top tier team but they seem to be flat of late while Oakland is a team who is riding momentum and looks to be having fun and are super loose. While I’m not sure the Raiders have progressed enough to beat the Steelers, this number looks more than generous enough to get a cover.
